FYI, tomorrow is the last Wednesday farmer’s market in Coos Bay for the season.

Last week for the pumpkin patch! Mahaffy Ranch, open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10-6.  Look for the sign across from the community center in Alleghany. Pretty little farm, with hay rides and animals and lots and lots of pumpkins.  Pumpkins were pretty cheap, but you have to pay separately for everything else.  Good fresh roasted corn and apple cider!

Check out this article with wonderful photos from The World’s Benjamin Brayfield. (The link is the title of this post.) Stand up for the Bay was the first annual stand up paddle board event and luau on the Coos Bay boarwalk to raise money and awareness in attempts to start a local chapter of the Surfrider Foundation in Coos Bay.  This would be incredibly awesome.  To learn more, email beachcarmen@yahoo.com.  He needs a few more people to help him in the process of creating a local chapter here.

Octoberfish! This wonderfully named event is an annual festival that benefits the Oregon Coast Community Action’s children’s programs.  They are a GREAT local non-profit and deserve as much money as our community can give them.  Admission is only a dollar, which is awesome. So hopefully the more the merrier so they can fundraise by numbers rather than a steep entry fee.  I dig it.

The event is held in the Old Charleston School on Seven Devils Road on the way to South Slough. It’s kind of a wierd old auditorium. There’s lots of live music all day, which is cool, as well as local booths and kids activities.

text 6 Oct want a burrito?

Good lord there are a lot of mexican food places in Coos County.  Some of them suck.  But a lot of them are actually really good (unless you are a mexican food snob, which there are a surprising number of…).

People seem to get worked up about this topic and have undying allegiances to particular restaurants, but here are my picks:

La Costa, El Sol, Puerta Vallarta:  all great sit down “restaurant-style” mexican food, each with a slightly different style.  La Costa also has Peruvian dishes.

There is not much in the way of a taco truck style place where you can grab a burrito and take off stuffed for under $5, but the closest we have is Atilanos, which is shockingly not that bad.  Their breakfast burrito was yummy and had real sausage.  Great to grab in the morning and take off exploring on a Saturday.  Ignore their outside appearance and give them a try, as long as your expectations of a super wonderful taqueria San Diego style are not too high.
